ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management. A furniture workshop is a physical place: wood is cut, panels are veneered, finishes are sprayed, foam is shaped, and every one of those steps leaves something behind.
The standard asks us to know what we produce and to manage it deliberately — timber offcuts and dust, finishing materials, packaging, and the energy the workshop uses. Instead of treating waste as the unavoidable end of the process, it is measured, and reducing it becomes part of how the work is planned.
This matters most in the choices made before anything is cut: sizing panels to reduce offcuts, ordering materials to specification rather than in excess, and building pieces that can be repaired and re-upholstered instead of replaced.
The longest-lasting environmental decision in furniture is still the simplest one — make something well enough that it stays in the room.
